In 2017, scientists from the University of California calculated that the total amount of plastic ever made in the entire world is 8.3 billion tonnes.

They found that only 30% is still in use - the rest had become waste.

Of this, only about 9% has been recycled, 12% has been sent to incinerators and 79% has gone to landfill or into the environment. Since plastic does not decompose, this amounts to an almost permanent contamination of the environment.
