Colour photographs from a variety of productions convey the ambition, doubt, horror and decline of the protagonists. Emotions and actions become much clearer when students can see how these have been portrayed on the stage.

This shortened version is supported by modern narrators who link the scenes and review events, making the action clear for all readers. Their dialogue (clearly marked in the text as not being part of Shakespeare's play) clarifies, where necessary, things that would not be immediately obvious to present day students - such as the customs around succession and loyalty. They summarise the action and prepare students for what is going to happen, guiding them through the twists and turns of the plot and supporting their understanding of the original text.
